Degenerate gambler, inside trader -- the stench of Phil's amoral character makes me wonder what else the oldest winner of the PGA is hiding.

A lot, as any golf writer, tournament sponsor or PGA Tour exec, could tell you in a weak moment after a few drinks.

The 50,000 acts of kindnesses comes off as the corniest and fakest gesture I’ve ever heard.

Good stuff. But why wouldn't these guys think that the media exists only to flatter? Few sports have seen their press ranks shrink like golf has, to the point that the number of critics with credibility (like Lynch) who still have an outlet can just about be counted on one hand. Phil has no idea how good he has it. Heck, this thing will probably pump up his score for that ridiculous PGA Tour social mentions bonus program, from which he was already guaranteed to make millions.

Good column. Thanks for posting it. I might add that a lot of golf media, not all by any means, but more than a few in my experience, are victims of golf's most pleasant but unfortunate myth, that everybody who plays the sport is in a fundamental sense in it together. All of 'em, just all the fans, play golf, so they are prone to fall for the idea that they and the likes of Mickelson and DeChambeau are all part of the same tribe, the only difference being the latter two are better at it. This is complete nonsense and the slightest acquaintance with the Tour should disabuse anyone of the notion. I always use myself as an example. When I golf, I'm an old fart playing the game for fun. Bryson DeChambeau is a supremely fit, supremely trained, psychotically competitive young athlete playing a cutthroat professional sport for huge sums of money. It ain't the same thing. It ain't even the same reality.

Phil gets a pass? Huh. When's the last time an everyday sports beat writer do a true investigative takedown?

You mean Phil didn’t win this going away? Given how he was threatening to never play in Detroit again, I immediately assumed he was drawing large galleries due to his blowing the field away on a weekend that Bryson and everyone else missed the cut or pissed themselves.

We lost our investigative reporter before we lost our golf writer

Cam Davis was never going to win it. He had to have someone lose it.

And Lebioda putted scared down the stretch. Everything was super short.
