I just find your angle on this to be... bizarre.
I mean, people make differing incomes in all kinds of teams. In all kinds of businesses. They aren't torn apart.

I wonder if some smart lawyer is prepping a class action suit on behalf of regular students looking for their end in all this? How does this square with non-profit institutions?

Also, this totally changes the calculus for hiring an AD.

They need to hold back a few scholarships for accounting students to help them keep track of things.

Are regular students being denied income using their NIL?

That wouldn’t be a very smart lawyer. No regular student has ever been denied the right to earn income using their name, image and likeness. They can go out and do it right now.

Nope. They're just being stuck with hundreds of dollars per semester/term in athletic fees to prop up programs that lose millions of dollars a year.

Maybe if athletes can sell their name to make money, students who pay for most, if not all, of their education and chose not to support athletics can opt out from those fees.

Are we gonna file suit because the chess club president doesn’t get to screw the homecoming queen too?

    You can’t possibly believe this.

And if true, why should this stop someone from profiting on their own name? Why should the school control what an athlete can make out side of the University? It’s a simple control mechanism and the people who suffer are usually poor black kids.

Yes, I do think that at least half of FBS and almost all of FCS athletic programs are propped up by student fees. Judging by the attendance at said events, the majority of students don't give a rat's ass about athletics but are still forced to pay more than a reasonable amount per semester/term.

Attendance at MACtion games runs in the hundreds. Have you had a child in college recently and checked the incidental fees they are required to pay? Trust me, the athletic fee is not "incidental."
    • State funding is often restricted for educational use, so four out of five of the 230 D-I public universities charge students a fee to finance sports teams, according to an NBC News investigation, with some charging in excess of $2,000 annually.

Colleges spend billions from students to finance their sports programs

So the athlete should not be able to make any money?
