Let's Eat! (A Food Thread)

Seems to be a lot of discussion about food - preferences, restaurants etc. I could not find a general food thread. Anyway - I saw in the store on the 4th of July that Tostitos is now selling an "Avacado Salsa."

Now I love guacamole. I love salsa. What a perfect combo right? Like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, or Dijionaise. Uh, no. It isn't really salsa - way to creamy (obviously) and it isn't guacamole (it just doesn't taste right). So a hard pass.

Other July 4th notes - I realize there is a reason I tend to not eat macaroni salad more than once or twice a year. Three times if I don't want whoever brought it to a potluck to feel bad about leaving with an almost full bowl. And I come down firmly on the side of mustard potato salad rather than the egg based variety.

Watching a cooking show at work and apparently in Alabama they like their BBQ with "white sauce" (shocker). The ingredients include mayo, sugar and salt (and then seasonings) - anyone have it before? Is it good?

Yes, white sauce is good if it is made well. It should be a thin sauce, and not anything resembling "ranch dipping sauce" or any thick shit like that. It originated in north Alabama at a restaurant decades ago and has since been knocked off repeatedly. Most people can't make it worth a damn.

It's best on smoked chicken, which often is dried out because whoever smokes it doesn't pay attention and ruins it. White sauce IMO sucks for pulled pork or ribs. Just like with steaks, if prepared correctly they need no sauce.

Why wouldn't there be eggs in a mustard-based potato salad? Potatoes (duh), eggs, onions, celery. Mayo mustard salt pepper.

Because some of us are smart enough to know that eggs are the spawn of Satan and have been used in far too many foods. They’ve already ruined breakfast, don’t ruin picnic potlucks too.

My kid doesn't generally eat eggs and making her breakfast had been a ginormous pain her entire life. Eat an egg and some toast FFS!

Greatest breakfast in my life was up in Mendocino County at an Inn along Highway 1.

    The Vegan Rancheros.

Your basic base for huevos rancheros minus the egg. Corn tortillas with black beans as the base. Hash browns. Pico De Gallo. Bell Peppers. Spinach. Green Onion. I ditch the avocado and add sausage. It was a religious experience. A full breakfast with no eggs.
