    He's writing, but no dateline and not the lead story. Steve Douglas has been the lead writer with the Sandwich dateline.

    Exactly. It's Cal State Fullerton, not Fullerton State. It's Long Beach State not Cal State Long Beach. To say nothing of Cal Davis.

    Good God. Morikawa is unflappable. He's outside the top 100 this season in putting, so of course he's making everything today.

    It's Fresno State. Except the official name of the school is California State University, Fresno. It just sounds wrong when somebody calls it Cal State Fresno. (And a guy named Cal Davis was a very good offensive lineman for Florida, which has nothing to do with this conversation.)

    His last two putts have sealed it. He’s on at 16 and can play 17 and 18 with a 3-iron and 7 or 8 if he wants. That swing isn’t breaking down now.

    I tend to bristle at the young guys who come up with a lot of hype, and it feels like Morikawa snuck up quietly on the inside lane and blew the doors off a few other players.

    I blame the Cal State University system for letting this go. I have about 1000 things that say, "Cal State Long Beach". And about 1,001 that say "Long Beach State". And now they also go by "Beach". Their messaging over the years has been about as good as the Los Angeles Angels.

    I go with "UC" for all the University of California schools, except Berkeley.
