Your hot dog

Years ago David Berg was another popular hot dog brand in Chicago ... supposedly they were the first hot dogs served in a ballpark (at White Stockings games). Vienna bought Berg out in the early '90s, and I think they still sell some products under the David Berg brand. Both are "kosher style," although they don't have a kosher seal.

Hebrew National makes a great hot dog as well, and they are kosher. Considering the reputation that hot dogs and USDA meat inspectors have, a higher processing standard is not a bad thing.

Give me a Portillos jumbo chili cheese dog with grilled onions (been told their grilled onions come when they just slice an onion and dump it in hot oil until the desired consistency). I'll take that every day for the rest of my life - however long that lasts, if I'm eating fried onions every day.

For homemade, I'll take a good all beef, natural casing dog (from Usingers in Milwaukee, preferably), with either ketchup and raw onions, or mustard and relish/sauerkraut.

Hot dogs are just okay in my book. I'll eat them, but doubt I have them more than six times a year. Mother made them a lot while growing up, and I think I just tired of them.

My favorite is Chicago style, but I haven't had that more than three times in my life while in that city.

Second favorite style is with kethup and mustard. The hell with those who denounce kethup on hot dogs.

As an Ohioan, I feel obligated to say Cincinnati-style coney dog as my third favorite. But that's not something I'd want frequently and not something I have more than once a year. It's great when you're in the mood for some cheese, though.

Maybe the most disappointed I've ever been was getting Skyline conies at Great American Ballpark.
I was there to see the Braves play the Reds. Skyline conies were played up like it was the second coming.
I ordered. I bit in. I soon wondered how in the heck we lost the Civil War.

In my former newspaper life, we had an independent baseball league that started up, and we covered every game.

The beat writer filed from the press box, and the concession stand people would bring in a box full of unsold food after the game. The beat writer always brought it back to the office, and their "special" was called Texas Corn Dogs - foot-long corn dogs.

I don't care how old, stale or cold those things were. They were always magnificent.

Getting out of the sportswriter business improved my life in many ways but probably prolonged it, too, because concession stands stopped being my main dining option.

In my early 20s, I was holding a slice of hockey rink pizza (think Elio's) and an AD walked up to me and asked, "do you have a death wish?" He knew.

Yeah, they're not that good. But boy do Cincinnati people love them.

If anyone on here ever wants to try one, you'd better like cheese.
