Why does UCLA get a pass in your universe?

I'd put BYU and UNLV in there with initials only.

Because no one anywhere calls it UC Los Angeles like other UC schools.

No one calls TCU "Texas Christian." Nor do they call SMU "Southern Methodist."

Neither are religious schools anymore and haven't been for decades. There are no religious requirements whatsoever at SMU. The only one at TCU is that students must take one religion class in order to graduate, but it can be ANY religion class, including "Religion in the Movies."

There are many schools that are known only by their initials.

Outside of the sports scene I would add NYU and MIT. Maybe RPI for hockey fans.

This is a bad take, for several reasons.
USC - the University of Southern California, has won 110 NCAA national championships - trailing only Stanford and UCLA.
The University of South Carolina has won won four.

Depending on where in the country you live, MSU could be Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri State or Montana State.

When somebody mentions USF to me, I have remember if it's the guy who graduated from San Francisco or the guy who graduated from South Florida.

    Dons! Bulls!

I don’t see MSU all that often here. At least in Mississippi and Alabama, people just call it “State” and it is assumed that is who you are talking about.
