In the ACC region, there is no confusion when someone refers to "Carolina" or "State."

Poor South Carolina. It tries to claim USC and Carolina, but gets neither outside of its own little bubble.

Exactly. There is only one USC. And it ain't in Columbia.

Even South Carolina doesn't refer to itself as USC, it has "Carolina" written on its football jerseys, which my friends from North Carolina - the true Carolina in college athletics - find hilarious.

Out here in WCC country (to basketball fans, anyways), USF is always San Francisco. I think VCU is nationally recognizable too, at least to basketball fans.

Gimme 4-5 ex-players or caddies (Dottie Pepper, Bones, Feherty when he's not trying too hard to be Feherty, either one of the Immelman's and/or Morgan Pressel) on the course, Tirico in the booth to direct traffic. I wanna hear the player-caddie pre-shot conversation, have the shot tracer and show me the slope of the greens before a putt and I'd be happy. Faldo and Azinger provide zero commentary of value ("he needs to make a good shot here" - no kidding) and Nantz and Hicks just spend too much time man-splaining.

I used to cover South Carolina sports, and yes, they often refer to themselves as USC.

    But no one else does.

The argument being the university is older than Southern Cal so therefore gets first dibs. In fact, at one point I recall there used to be some faction that called South Carolina the "original" USC, or the "real" USC.

As for the WCC, most people here probably think it is a credit union.

Probably so. Like those of us on the Left Coast think of a bank when Sun Belt or Atlantic Sun are mentioned.

And truth be told most West Coasters couldn't name very many WCC schools once they got past Gonzaga, and their local Catholic university.

People in South Carolina can’t even spell USC.

But they probably know "in" from "is".

I worked with someone who insisted his alma mater was UTEP and Texas El Paso was “the lazy way” of saying it
