That's probably why she didn't tell them. They would want the right to publish the book!

All of this. There are multiple posts here written as if in Tokyo she’d be somehow restricted by not being able to write about Phelps. I’d think this story that got her in trouble will account for the paper’s only major Phelps story of this cycle, regardless of this brouhaha.

He’s not competing. He’s retired. Not to diminish the mistakes she already made but normal swimming coverage in Tokyo shouldn’t present any significant conflict of interest at this point.

I've known Karen for years, think very highly of her and hope this was just an oversight.

When I wrote a book many years ago, I had to go through several steps of approval with my paper. The policy was very clear and you were OK if you followed it to the letter.

    Maybe.

But just to be clear, it is an option, not a right to publish the book. It would have meant that she has to talk to them about it before she shops it elsewhere, so they have a chance to make an offer. She would have been under no obligation to accept their offer.

Better than someone finding a picture of her wearing a sombrero at a costume party 20 years ago and everyone screaming on Twitter for her resignation.

It's a sure bet that Phelps will be at the Olympics in Tokyo, even if not in a competitive role, and Crouse will be missing that (in person, at least) if she doesn't go.

Phelps was a presence at the U.S. Olympic Trials, mixing with current swimmers and doing some media commentary work, which I believe he will also be doing for NBC at the actual Games. So these are legitimate next steps, to be watched/seen and followed up on if you're writing about him, particularly if you're going to be reporting regarding mental-health issues and, I assume, any plans/hopes toward recovery (which the link that Alma posted mentioned).

I would be surprised if Phelps travels to Covid riddled Japan where there are no spectators.

I've seen nothing about this among the journo navel gazers.

This rings about as many alarms as the Ohio State memorabilia scandal would today.

Why would Maggie Haberman's entire tenure be a conflict of interest?

It's not politics and it's not scandalous, but it's as basic as it gets on journalism ethics. You need alarms?
