Yeah, the positions have definitely shifted. Chris Paul is one of the last of the “classic” point guards. It’s kind of hard to compare what he does to a guy like Lillard.

There’s really no argument at all for a lot of those guys.

My point is that Paul isn't top 5 (maybe not top 10) but that's not a knock on him.

By the way, the starting PG for the Heat in LeBron’s first year? Mostly Carlos Arroyo.

Silly me, I was thinking about Al McCoy.

Except that you listed a lot of guys that aren’t as good as Chris Paul. I don’t think there’s a decent argument that would put him below sixth.

Man I had a full snark post written up about NBA Jam and BJ Armstrong. Glad I looked it up because damn would I have looked stupid and your point is well taken.

Nash is absolutely top ten, I think. But CP’s stats are better across the board and he’s a seven-time all-defensive team pick. Nash couldn’t play defense for shit. (And I’m a big Nash fan.)

I wish I could watch a tape of an entire game between Philadelphia and Boston from about 1962 so I could watch Chamberlain, Russell and Cousy. The brief clips I have watched are interesting. Cousy appears to only have a set shot and is does not like to use his left hand.

The tough thing about “best point guard” lists is you think the tenth-best PG should be right about the 50th greatest player all-time or the fifth-best would be in the ballpark of the 25th-best player all time. Five positions on the court and so on.

    It just doesn’t add up.

Wow, Lakers might get SJ's greatest point guard ever.
