Crazy to think this all started 30 years when Joe Paterno got mad at the eastern schools and went to the Big 10.

The Big Ten still has the academic snobbery the ACC abandoned when it let Louisville join
North Carolina and Virginia would be their most desired options
Georgia Tech and Miami might be more realistic

My guess is that the OU/UT athletic departments think global warming is a hoax. Human beings, when confronting the loss of substantial income, frequently enter a psychological state known as denial.

Maryland was a great get for the Big Ten, but Maryland never should’ve left the ACC (except for the minor money thing). Those mid-January Iowa-Maryland games at whatever replaced Cole isn’t the same as Maryland-Carolina or even Maryland-Wake.

The way a school can finance an exit fee is as follows. The athletic department borrows money with the promise to repay from the increased revenue streams. For example, the Colorado athletic department borrowed money for a stadium remodel and promised to repay with proceeds from the Pac 12 network. THe Pac 12 network has never really made any money but the school will be stuck with the bill.

Another example. As part of the dorm fee Washington State has created a fund to maintain the dorms. The athletic department has been borrowing from this fund for operations. And if the athletic department can not repay? Well, the dorm fees will go up.

Maryland was broke and needed the Big 10 Network cash.

And they had an unrestricted $20 million gift from the Under Armour guy to help finance the exit costs.

I find it interesting that this is happening at the dawn of NIL, which could bring the whole damn system crashing down within five years. Any advantages Texas gets by moving to the SEC could be short lived.

I wonder when the Big 12 got shot down when seeking a TV extension. If it was after the proposal for a 12-team playoff, that might indicate executives are pricing in diminished interest in regular season games.
