And, there’s a pretty good reason for the fire extinguisher to be there.

As Mngwa noted, you aren't the intended recipient of the message.

The bust belongs in a museum (or a carnival baseball toss booth.)

If the state legislature where I lived put up a bust of a guy who directed a massacre of hillbillies that were serving in the US Army and later founded an organization dedicated to terrorizing and subjugating all hillbillies, damn right I’d get mad about passing it every day, even if it were the size of a marshmallow.

Why are there more statues to Confederate ‘generals’ than Patton, Bradley, MacArthur, Pershing, Clark, Nimitz and Halsey?

Because they were built to keep the South's black population in fear.

But how are we going to learn about WWII if we don’t have statues?

I can say with 100% sincerity that I wouldn't give a shit. The first time I noticed it, think, "Boy, I'm glad I'm not married to her anymore." After that, I'd probably never give it another glance. It's not like it's a coiled rattlesnake on the shelf or one of the three challenges from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade you have navigate each day.

My initial post was about the use of the word "painful" in the story, not the bust.

Maybe “what if it was a bust of the kidnapper of your grandmother who was never arrested but exalted as a hero, affecting the standing and wellbeing of your family ever since” is a stronger analogy.

Someone explain how the lionization of Confederate sympathizers passes muster? People realize that by definition they were traitors who committed treason, no? I don't care what reasons they have, the fundamental premise of a society is you agree to follow the rules in place, not declare war on the established government.

If we were talking about Mussolini or Hitler or Stalin and someone tried to overthrow the government would you say they have to "follow the rules in place, not declare war on the established government," you don't care what reasons they have?

I'd imagine the people who cling to those Condereracy figures believe that they were fighting a righteous fight. Therefore they are heroes to them, even if they didn't win.

Here's the point, if you're fighting Mussolini or Hitler or Stalin, what do you care about whether you're committing treason or not?

The key distinction is that the Union won and that same form of government remains today, the lineage is straight from now to the Founders right? If the Nazi Germany government were still in place, do you think they'd allow statutes to Schindler or Anne Frank?

For those who think it was a righteous fight, you lost, you don't get to continue to think it was a righteous fight, otherwise how are you any different than the Black Panthers? Nation of Islam? Communist Party? Can we start erecting statutes of Huey Newton? Elijah Mohammed? Right here in Oakland.
