A legend of a local sports anchor. The influence he wielded for decades is simply unfathomable.

Is there anyone else in the country who was comparable?

And in a sign of the times, will his station even present sports on the early news now that Hansen has retired?

To answer the question, Joe Trahan is the heir apparent.

Think about this. He — a local TV guy — broke the SMU cheating scandal wide open. TV guys are supposed to be cheerleaders. He did great work and didn’t get whacked. And this was when the Morning News had an all-star staff.

I thought he was as good a football radio color analyst as anything else he did.

    That's talent, acing multiple roles.

Hansen's producer at WFAA during the SMU scandal was one of my professors in college and he walked us through how that all went down. Dale is truly a legend. DFW has a good sports guy at every station.

I remember reading a journalism review article in the 80's/90/s that WFAA was practicing the best local televisuon in the country. The SMU story is an example of a station willing to devote the resources to a story and also having the courage to air it.

I think of Dallas as a pretty conservative place. I am impressed that Hansen has editorialized in favour of things like Kaepernick, BLM, etc. The station must get a great deal of blowback. I've watched a few clips and I think he does them well, in a measured manner.

I can't find it in YouTube, but there used to be a clip of him and an anchor doing a live promo for the upcoming newscast. The anchor said something like "And Dale will tell us about the Cowboys 24-17 win over the Eagles" and t he camera went to Hansen. His reply was something like "if you are giving the score I guess you don't need me".
