Won his second-round heat; first round was for seeding purposes only. The real upset was the other round 2 heat — first, that Jeremy Flores and Julian Wilson fell into it, but especially that Leo Fioravanti beat both of them.

Because Gabriel Medina is still in the men’s surfing field, here’s a quick look at how surfing’s priority rule works from the World Surf League’s FAQ page:

Q: What is priority and how does it work?
A: The surfer with priority has the unconditional right of way to catch any wave they choose. Other surfers in the heat can paddle for, and catch, the same wave, but only if they don't obstruct or hinder the scoring potential of the surfer with priority. At the start of the heat once the first wave has been ridden, the remaining surfer in the lineup gets automatic priority. A surfer loses priority once they catch a wave and/or their hands leave the rails (edges of the surfboard) as they attempt to stand up. If two or more surfers catch a wave, the first surfer to make it back to the lineup will get priority. Priority is indicated by colored discs at the event site.

Hopefully he left his asshole father at home.

Booker, Middleton and Holliday deserve credit for joining the team, but they're pretty obviously shot and understandably so.

What sucks is the same hypocritical haters who criticise athletes for kneeling during the anthem are going to celebrate this team's failure.

Hank Iba wonders what all the fuss is about.

I know there's constant discussions about what athletes are the most fit or the most athletic, but what about water polo? They tread water forever and they throw the ball with nothing holding them up except the water. It's not like they can push off of anything. It's kind of amazing. I would drown.

A good friend of mine is a longtime water polo coach and her son played at the DIII level, so I've seen a lot of it. It's pretty amazing.

    No question.

it’s bizarre those three were needed to fill out the team.
