Fighting against fascists would have been a fight against authoritarianism and tyranny. The Confederate’s good fight was the right to continue the practice of and expand on slavery. Those two things are hardly analogous. Plus those two dictators would have put to death anyone who opposed them and likewise imprisoned or executed anyone who wanted to immortalize them. We are having a debate about whether we should take down “relics of history” aka purposeful reminders to Blacks that Whites were on charge.

They are not analogous to you or me.

That's the thing about a war. Both sides think they are on the right side.

He asked how people still revere those confederate generals and said he doesn't care what your reasons are, "the fundamental premise of society is you agree to follow the rules in place, not declare war on the established government."

I was giving examples -- picking the extremes of Stalin or Hitler -- to say that in those cases, I'd bet he wouldn't suggest that people should have agreed to follow the rules and not declare war on the established government. It's all a matter of the perspective of the person making the judgment. In the case of the people still reliving the civil war, you can tell me they aren't analogous. ... but that's not how THEY see it. They think they have a righteous cause.

That’s fair. That is how those celebrating the losing side justify it.

I guess I’ll put it this way then. The people today have a diluted notion that those statues represent history of an honored struggle. So to your point, yeah the real reasons for the Civil War don’t matter. But those statues were not put up to honor the righteous struggle. They were erected with much more sinister intents. From the get go there was a push to reframe the war as part of some noble struggle rather than a fight over slavery, which even they knew was the reason. And the statues went up 50 years later as Jim Crow took hold. The attempt to rewrite history was more intentional.

    .

You're asking about lionization in the present? No justification for it. They were seditious assholes.

    xoxoxo,
And no, I don't want to join Daughters of the Confederacy even though I can.

Sweet ride. Is that what he drove to protect the airports at Mount Vernon?

They should sandblast Washington and Jefferson from Mt Rushmore. Tear down the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial and rename both the State of Washington and the Capital of the United States. Having both Washington and Columbia in the name is both an affront to decency and clearly intended to make minorities uncomfortable in this country.

Don't forget capitals: Jefferson City, Mo., Madison, Wis., Jackson, Miss., and Lincoln, Neb.

Let’s make sure we include Lincoln as a racist. Said he keep slavery if it saved the Union. Wanted the African slaves sent back to Africa, to Liberia. There’s no evidence he thought the slaves were the intellectual equals to whites. And every president after Lincoln was a dedicated racist, Maintained the status quo of bigotry and discrimination.

on the whole, America is a disgrace as a nation. Founded as a racist white supremacist nation, the single preoccupation of all Americans has always been how to subjugate their African slave descendants.

Hard to argue with this. After all, it has you for a citizen.
