The US seems to always go into these relays with the mindset that practicing the handoffs is secondary, sort of like how Cup teams show up at Daytona with four guys who've never used an air gun before and expect them to change tires in the 500.

I believe the US team got reinstated on appeal. Apparently the straw-hat guys set them up in the wrong place.

I was watching some China vs. (Taiwan) table tennis that was very shouty and I found myself wondering how many foreign language cuss words make it out unedited over the world feed. Or maybe they only edit out English, French and the host nation.

From the Timo Werner School of Offside Scoring...

I'm curious about how challenges to the rules are made - I gather in order to participate you have to agree to allow the Olympic Committee to be the final authority, because I could only imagine how many legal injunctions, filings, etc. could be sought and I have no idea where they would be filed, host country? aggrieved country? Switzerland?

Yeah, it's not like they dropped the baton or anything. Just a little technical gltch apparently not of their own making.

This is generalizing, but the IOC doesn't exactly "run" the events. The events are 'run' like any other track meet or swim meet by the IAAF or FINA or whomever, and so those organizations I think provide judges and review parameters and a Jury of Appeal. I think most of the judges are furnished by the home country but I assume each governing body sets the parameters.

This is accurate. The best way to think about the Olympics as a sports event is as a convention of world championships.

Mixed medley relay was super interesting, but US appears to have botched the lineup (again). Jacoby's goggles fell off when she hit the water and were around her chin the whole time but I think they really backed up in the fly leg.
