Everyone has their own definition of plentiful, but vouchers are out there but do come with some effort/strings attached. Bars that are hard for the chronically mental ill to meet.

I’d argue mental illness is the largest contributor to the homeless issue. Addiction is up there, too. It’s not exactly the availability of homes and structures as a primary concern. It’s that we lack an effective mechanism to deal with severe mental illness on a widespread scale.

Reagan got into some trouble with his comment that many homeless people are homeless by choice. What he meant, IIRC, was that the de-institutionalization movement of the 1970s (post One Flew Over the Cuccoo's Nest) allowed people to check themselves out of hospitals only to discover they had nowhere to live. Inartfully expressed but at least partially accurate.

Why should the burden of housing homeless or those who don’t want to pay rent, fall on property owners? A lot of land lords are working men, women and families who bought a rental property as a source of income.
Know a few couples who met when each owned a town house or condo, when they moved inn together rather than sell, they opted to have an income producing property with appreciation. They shouldn’t be penalized for investing and saving.

Moratorium on eviction, without a moratorium on property taxes, without a moratorium on maintenance and without a moratorium on mortgage payments is just taxation targeting a specific class of people and business

That’s not what he and Nancy and conservatives really meant. They meant that certain people refused to work and would rather spend their money and welfare on drugs than get jobs and rent a place to live. Contrary to GHWB, there is no such things as compassionate conservative. The Christian Right has never cared about anyone or anything but their own financial interests.

    Reagan was often inartful.

At thus point I’d say, if you’re mentally ill and/or addicted, housing comes major benefits but also a few challenges compared to homelessness, too.

And a lot of them are terrible people who willfully ignore their properties and house people in slums.

And I would argue that the cost of the homeless, the population living in our city centers, and the burden on health care, the human cost of being unhoused... Is a burden on all of us. I as a property owner should not and cannot solve it, but we as a society need to.
