It really is weird that once you get to the Olympics some athletes have to grind out an entire two week tournament, multiple matches and games and others are done after one night. I wonder if that plays into the endorsement dollars - you want an athlete who will make multiple appearances across a number of days to help build brand identity. So gymnastics, swimming, volleyball etc.

Are the track sprints and middle distance one day events?

-- For hyping Tokyo the city, they can use James May to do it.

-- At 5 p.m. Pacific Time, it's 9 a.m. Tokyo Time and that's when the day starts. At least the volleyball match (Ross and Kleinmann) that began their coverage last night was a live event.

-- One of the track prelims a couple of days ago -- might have been a women's 100m -- there was an empty lane. They said the runner (don't know who, what or where) had tested positive for HGH in an out-of-competition check done two weeks earlier.

-- My wife watches the events but it usually checking her phone and just sitting there. Last night, she dialed up the show with Kevin Hart and Snoop. She was laughing her ass off the whole time. It was more fun than the Games.

This really is the first Olympics where I feel out of sorts. No hype, terrible timing of events, no crowds and an incomprehensible TV schedule.

I'm actually enjoying the Primetime show. I DVR it. Get home, eat dinner, walk dog, then watch some cool events, like the mens 400 hurdles last night. Enjoyed seeing the trials of the 200 and 400 and women's long jump too.

Did catch some of the mens badminton final at lunch yesterday; badminton is insane. Touch, court coverage, overhead smashes, has everything athletic.

Short sprints and hurdles play out over two days -- heats one day, semis and final the next. The 400, 400 hurdles, 800 and 1,500 are three days -- heats, semis and final on separate days. In the Olympics, the 5,000 and steeplechase also have a round of prelims, followed by the final a couple days later. The 10,000 and marathon are one-shot deals.

    False.

Gold and Bronze are the two medals you must win to earn: Gold in all cases; bronze in tournament scenarios.

Athing Mu has been repeatedly mentioned during the trials and early rounds, but NBC is hoarding her race for the primetime show.
