    An adjunct to the music thread going back to the dawn of hip-hop and continuing today: Musical samples that fit into their own category of greatness.

    I heard a song on an alt radio station yesterday that built its melody around a sampled hook that sounded familiar. It fucking pestered me all day until I was ready to fall asleep and then I sat bolt upright in bed like Doc Brown: It was the horn outro at the end of Paul Simon's "My Little Town" from freaking 1975.

    The Beastie Boys and "Paul's Boutique" are considered groundbreaking for the use of samples, but even in 1989 based on the music I was listening to, I was accustomed to it. Are there any other ex-samples (get it?) that hit the mark?

    All-timer is Sugarhill Gang taking CHIC's "Good Times" (Bernard Edwards' bass line);

    Will Smith taking Kool & the Gang's "Summer Madness" for his hit "Summertime".

    There's a drum riff by The Soul Searchers - "Ashley's Roachclip" that on a podcast I heard on Milli Vanilli is on tons of songs.

    Also turning Michael McDonald into a great rap deserves a mention

    Not sure if this is what you mean but there's a snippet of "On Wisconsin" in "Be True to Your School" by the Beach Boys.

    Here is the video from the song I'm referencing. Not so much a sample as a copying of the riff. I don't know if Simon got a writing credit.

    One of the great New Wave classics--Blue Monday--is mostly samples or "homages" of other songs.

    Kanye has some great ones, especially sampling Kid Charlemagne in "Champion"

    Jurassic 5's "Concrete Schoolyard"...

    ...which samples Ike Turner's "Getting Nasty"...

    ...which I had somehow gotten my wife to agree to walk out to at our wedding reception before forgetting the CD at the hotel.

    This is a pretty obvious one that I didn't discover until recently when I heard the Horace Silver song on the local jazz station:
