He can do whatever he wants. But any notion that he's now private citizen Obama and it's none of our business anymore is bunk. He signed on for something for life when he went for the presidency. He was OK with it then, it stays with him now. And he achieved it all in a particularly image-conscious way. He chose the life of the publicest of public figures and has no problems basking in the perks that have come with the role. That makes him fair game when people see him acting like a starstruck nouveau riche {insert your characterization}.

Is he entitled to be that guy? Sure. And Maureen Down is entitled to call it like she sees it.

If we just make being poor suck even more than it already does people will decide to stop being poor?

Isn't unemployment nationally where it was before the shutdown?
I know my state is below 5%, and my county is even lower.
The claim that people aren't working is bull.

For sure. The unemployment rate is 5.4 percent. ... when you simply don't count millions of adults who don't work; just pretend that they don't exist.

The U3 unemployment rate is indeed 5.4 percent, using their nonsensical numbers. U6 is 9.6 percent, still a nonsensical number.

According to ShadowStats. ... the current honest number is 25.8 percent. You know, a number *gasp* where you actually count everyone. It's been stubbornly above 10 percent for the last 27 years. Their number certainly jibes much better with the actual labor force participation rate than a farcical 5.4 percent unemployment rate does.

I don't disagree with this sentiment, but, as usual, Obama, who was two presidents ago, still gets held to a much-higher standard. (Gee, I wonder why.) His successor, meanwhile, was and is the king of gross, tacky, gluttonous wealth -- literally shitting in gold toilets -- yet he's portrayed as a populist to the point where poor white people think they relate to him and have the same grievances that he has.

I would say this about Obama's party: I. Don't. Care. And Dowd shouldn't either. In fact, Dowd fell into the trap of taking a Fox News talking point about a nothing story and deciding to pile on.

Donald Trump doesn't get goofed on -- endlessly -- for being an ostentatious assclown?

Dowd herself has mocked Trump over and over again and wrote satirical columns imitating his moronic voice.

I think some of you are so clouded when it comes to these ex presidents that you can't consider that someone might just be calling it like they see it. ... not through the prism of who they want to like or dislike, not through the prism of a zillion whataboutisms. What if she is really being her own person and it's not that she "fell into the trap of taking a Fox News talking point"?

Fine. I guess I'm just so exhausted by faux outrage about things that don't matter that it rankles me when these kinds of columns get written. I don't care that the Obamas are having a party. There are bigger problems. Much bigger problems.
