If you've ever covered a race at Bristol, chances are you passed the school where this guy taught. It's right on I-81.
That community is very insular white/conservative is the best way I can describe it. They aren't white trash rednecks so to speak. Most of them just have never ventured out too much. They are fed a steady diet of evangelical preachers and Fox News.
A parent at one of their middle schools a couple of years ago pitched a fit because one of the state standards was to know the five pillars of Islam. No one was indocturating her kid. It was no different than knowing the names of the first five presidents or five planets. Still, it was a big stink.

Sounds familiar....hmmm "I don't like your attitude." What's that mean? Gee I wonder.

An extremely controlled and smartly maneuvered through interview there.

The teacher likely has 250 job offers after this piece.

ETSU, which shit-canned its basketball coach for daring to let his players kneel for the national anthem, might be a half-hour away if traffic is bad.

Yep, and that all got started by local state legislators and a car dealership.

    Sounds about right.

I'm so glad a good friend of mine who is native to the area does not live there. She married a man of a different race, which I strongly suspect would not go over well there. I know both her and him ... two of my best friends and one of the strongest marriages I know.

I don't know that it's that bad. Some older person might mumble something under their breath or say something stupid if they think they are talking to someone who agrees with them, but I've never witnessed an interracial couple or gay couple just be overtly mistreated in public.

They're not going to stop until it's nothing but white men.

Under what rationale do you erase Susan B. Anthony, and, one would think, the history of voting rights for women?

Also weird considering "Susan's List" is a major PAC (the conservative answer to Emily's List) aimed at appealing to women and promoting pro-life candidates. And yes, this is a big deal when you get to school curriculum stuff because textbook publishers want to sell books and tend to listen to the states that buy the most books. Good thing school districts tend to not have enough money to buy new history books these days.

This Okla. student is excited she's reading a textbook used by Blake Shelton. Her mother is not | CNN

And that one was a "reader" - one of the few parts of a school curriculum that hasn't been "updated" or revised in the last two decades (or three or for).
