So when does Sixteen Candles get re-released without Long Duck Dong?

They are making a Netflix show sequel called 53 Candles. Long Duck Dong now owns a string of car dealerships and is a millionaire.

And then Dong’s high school enemy gets drunk one night, sees Dong’s face on a billboard and spraypaints a dong on Dong.

Oh, we're in that ridiculous place. I wouldn't be surprised if Morris is toast.

Until you’ve been subjected to the slur and have it trigger memories from over fifty years ago, don’t pretend to know what it means. Understand it’s not one single instance that’s triggered; it’s hundreds, and all of sudden you remember tens of people on the playground laughing like it’s New Year’s Eve and you’re the only one not laughing.

That's certainly one way to try to shut up an opinion you don't agree with.

Just because you are outraged and saw a slur where there was none, doesn't mean you are right. Sorry.

This wasn't a kid with the intent to be mean to another kid because of his race. It was an unfunny attempt at imitating the accent of a Japanese native speaking English. We're pretty much at the point where you can't even acknowledge any difference between people -- we're not talking about making racist or derogatory comments -- without that acknowledgment equating to a slur. Intent and context do matter.

I think Morris will be on ice for a few weeks (the rest of the Tigers season) and then return, probably in a limited role.
He apologized quickly, didn't waffle in the apology or claim he'd been misquoted, etc etc.

He'll have to do a couple major mea culpa press conferences, too, and get through those without any incidents as well. One little hint of MAGGAT self justification and he's finished, except maybe in dudebro jock radio.

Of course he's 66 and played the last several years of his career in the relatively big money free-agent era; he shouldn't be in real desperate need of money.

Unintelligent people shouldn't attempt comedy. And I've listened to enough radio innings to know Jack Morris is not funny nor intelligent. So why not just fucking fire him?

I don't know what they'll do. But the path of least resistance would be to get rid of him if he wasn't Jack Morris and the Tigers. It's probably a close call.

That movie came out 34 years ago. I'm not sure that scene makes it to the screen today any more than "Blazing Saddles" does. They both made me laugh, and I'm not saying that's a healthy response - but times have changed, and so has what's acceptable.

Put me in the camp that says Morris is out for the season but likely returns next year.

When was the last time you saw a minority “make fun” of a person in the majority and have the crowd of minorities mock that person?

I didn’t say I disagreed with the opinion; I was disagreeing with the minimization of what Morris did.

I do think it was deragotory, he was making fun of Ohtani.

Laughing at that scene was a healthy response.

I agree that just because something was acceptable decades ago, doesn't mean that it was cool then or now. For example, casual racism or homophobia, which had hateful intent. That doesn't mean that everything anyone finds a reason offended by -- and this is becoming a runaway thing -- should be automatically shut down.
