He's not bad, but due to the fractured schedule he's been on the past few years, due in a fair degree to Gibson's health situation as I noted above, he's in a situation in which they could throw him in the closet for a few weeks and nobody will particularly notice.

I think if he makes a sufficient show of public contrition and resolves to do better, he'll be back.

It's not like he has a lengthy history of objectionable on-air statements, although some stories attempted to drag in one semi-sexist quote he gave as a player 31 years ago.

The quote demonstrated a sexist attitude toward women in the locker room, but more than that it demonstrated what an asshole Morris as a player was to everybody in the media. (Which he was.)

Yeah, I remember him as the D-Backs manager and how everything he did and said seemed two beats off. I knew he took a beating as a player but it didn't explain just how slow he was moving and speaking. He was diagnosed right before being fired by La Russa, right? I heard him last week while checking in on Cabrera's bid for 500 and he sounded pretty good.

Harry Caray was just a charachiture of himself his last few years. Every now and then Gibson's 17-strikeout game show up on baseball classics or (I imagine, since everything else is there) YouTube and he sounded sharp and on top of everything, like the count and the inning. At the end, not so much.

As for Morris: Isn't watching this year's Tigers punishment enough?

The Tigers have actually gotten fairly interesting, if only that the bottomless pit of the teardown process appears to be over and they're actually putting together the framework of a team.

Barring a huge surge one way or the other in the final month, they're on pace to win 75-85 games, which is about 15 games better than anyone expected.

I think their preseason over/under on wins was about 65.

I bet I've watched this video 10 times each time it's been posted on these threads. An all-time classic.
I bet not 10% of kids under the age of 15 could name a local baseball announcer if you polled them on the streets.

Harry Caray trying to pronounce Mark Grudzielanek sometimes took 3 innings.

It'd be fine by me if the Tigers sucked forever under A.J. Hinch, but they are in fact OK and in a great division to make some progress. The White Sox are the only team with the capability to build a sustained winner, but I don't trust Reinsdorf not to figure out a way to tear it down once those guys become expensive. Plus, the playoffs are probably getting expanded the fuck wide open whenever the next CBA is signed.

I'm glad to see you coming around to the idea of restoring decorum to our culture.

You seriously just well actuallied an Asian-American poster about whether his experience with people using a fake accent in an ill-conceived attempt at humor allows him to say it is offensive?

One factor completely separate from Gibson's health, I think, is in the first year or so after his return to commentary after being whacked as manager by the Dbacks, he was being pretty self conscious in trying not to offend almost everybody because he still had hopes of returning to active managing and coaching (possibly with the Tigers) and since his Parkinson's diagnosis that's mostly gone by the boards, so he's a little less afraid to tweak people on occasion.
He's not a bomb thrower by any standard, but when he was in his semi comatose stage as a commentator it didn't help that in addition to being dull and boring he was trying to be as utterly inoffensive as possible.
