One of the reason's Gannett grew to become the biggest chain and incredibly profitable was their ability to keep unions out. Gannett was noted for their industry leading profit margins. We will see if the company has retained these skills.

Ha, I think Tony was a Star-Ledger reader, which might be in even worse shape than the papers Gannett's gutted/gutting.

I wonder when Newhouse is going to bail out of newspapers. They seem to just be sitting on the properties, waiting for them to die.

Quite right. The Star Ledger is a ghost of what it once was, the paper of record for New Jersey. And its nj.com web site has an identity crisis -- it has stories from southern NJ where it has few if any subscribers while rewriting stories from jerseydigs.com and northern weeklies on its so-called home turf of Newark and Essex County. Newhouse is confused about what the Star Ledger/nj.com should be and subscribers have fled in droves. Ted Sherman is the only reporter there worth reading IMO.

The Trenton Times is down to TWO editorial employees! Hard to believe the Trentonian likely will outlive the TT.

Yeah, I was just thinking what would the Star Ledger look like today on Tony Soprano's front porch?*** It'd probably just be a leaflet of retweets.

***Unless you think he was murdered in the final scene of The Sopranos

Its embarrassing how the Star Ledger dusts off Repeat Pete Genovese from retirement for another "10 best crab cake food trucks" list that he originally wrote years ago and updates by adding in a name or two. The Top 10 food lists and endless "who A-Arod was seen with last night" pieces are beyond worthless.
