And my retort is if you're unvaxxed and going to a bar, you're a dipshit, and I have no remorse if you pick up COVID in that setting.

Not trying to pick a fight either, but I'm not staying huddled in my space until the end of the year because idiots wont' get a free vaccine. I'm quite happy to mask up in most scenarios, including any where kids may be present.

I know you follow Virginia news ... it is absolutely burning through the Spotsylvania and Stafford Schools right now. I know a local JV team with 14 positives. At least one local varsity game has been cancelled tomorrow because of Covid.

Worse times: Coming to a Commonwealth near you!

Yeah, the schools are a disaster, as predicted. It sucks. Spotsy's been a hot spot for a few months now. I mean, I take some solace in knowing that the bartenders at my usual haunts (I keep a tight rotation of three or four and I know pretty much all of them) are all vaxxed. It's a total YMMV situation. My outlook would be entirely different if I were a teacher rather than a golf administrator/comms person who spends much of his time dealing with people outdoors.

As a classroom teacher, I'm waiting for when we are going to have to shutdown. Not if, when.

It would have happened already, but my district isn't springing to test students. Only staff. Only every other week.

Hey don't worry though! The local yahoos will for sure be at the next school board meeting explaining that even the smallest bit of preventative measures are actually just tyranny.

    It's so depressing.

It wouldn’t be because of masks. It’d be because of social media. The guy in Louisiana lives 1000 miles from me and, as wrong as he is, only social media makes it possible for that guy to live in my head or your head for even a second. Turn I walk outside, talk to three of the mildest-mannered neighbors and…yeah. That’s the life I live. Easy to forget it.

While I mostly agree, the problem is metastasizing.

See any number of a few thousand videos of recent school board meetings for evidence. Even, "Hey if your kid is sick, please keep them home," is turning into "OMG IT'S TYRANNY!!!"

Plus, the mask thing has been synced up with another flashpoint in school districts right now. School district meetings at the moment are a real mess.

That's cool. Truly no animosity about it. For me, given the exploding numbers on Delta pretty much anyone who hangs out in a crowded bar at all, particularly if they are unvaxxed, is just asking to catch the bug.

I would add that each of us have different parameters they use to evaluate risk. You live alone, and any risks you take are your own and you make the call. My wife is seriously immune impaired, so I look at everything through a lens of not wanting to catch the virus and inadvertently expose her before I realize it.

The ones I have come to resent and very close to hating are those who simply refuse to admit that Covid exists, to learn any of the actual facts as opposed to viral nonsense, to reach a point where they are qualified to make an informed judgement. These are the people who put everyone they come into contact at risk, no matter how carefully those people work to protect themselves. Things like sending your kid to school knowing/suspecting that they have an active case of Covid make me incredibly angry.

Thankfully I'm more of a day/happy hour imbiber so they're not all that crowded when I'm there ... so that's something at least. But your point is well taken.

Alice and I like to eat at the bar of our favorite local restaurant because we're friends with the bartender/part owner. Also, it's a fine place to catch up on the local gossip. It isn't the kind of place where the youngs crowd in to seek company, costs too much. Our town is 90 percent fully vaccinated. It's not a no risk situation, but I believe the risk is low enough to make a weekly pleasure worth it.
