yeah, that’s fair. Institutions isn’t the right word.

I’d put it this way: Trump’s “midnight in America” speech at the 2016 Convention alarmed me with its deep cynicism about the brokenness of a nation that, IMO, wasn’t half bad at the moment he gave it.

Five years on, it feels like both sides are miserable and pretty incapable of selling a positive America story. I’m not sure either side wants to do so. To conservatives, it’s a nation way too full of controlling progressives telling them what to do and think. To progressives, it’s a nation way too full of fatalistic, heartless conservatives who want to see the world burn.

both sides sell their stories pretty well, I think.

If you'll allow a friendly alternative version ... selling folks on the idea that everything wrong with the world is those folks' fault has always been a helluva lot easier dollar.

I found this a really interesting, positive and quietly important article, about someone who I, at least, had only ever heard of by just a name, without really knowing its significance. I wasn't sure where to post this, and so decided to put it here, on a politics-related thread. I considered putting it on the Juneteenth thread, but that seemed such an old, little-viewed one, so this location just seemed better.

I like history and am glad now to have read, and to know more, about Robert Carter III. Everybody should.

Like Washington and Jefferson, he championed freedom. Unlike the founding fathers, he freed his slaves - CNN
