California is very big and there are lots and lots of beautiful places there that have no crowds in the sense you're talking about.

Do you think the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs having a relationship and even occasional dialogue with his Chinese counterpart is an extraordinary event?

Oh, no doubt. There are plenty of oceans and mountains I'd like to see, but the parts I'd like to visit are the famous places I've heard about since growing up on Sherwood Schwartz reruns.

I think when it's to say what was said - and then initial response in rebuttal is "the media blew it out of proportion" I think, from the mindset of a general American citizen, yeah, it's kind of extraordinary. But that's me, not the worldly intellect of Mark "hey, lookit" Milley at work.

My brother just sold his SoCal home for $300,000 more than what they bought it for three years ago and have pulled up stakes and moved to Idaho. My SIL will commute via Southwest because, well, she makes bank.

How many California conservatives wind up moving to Bear’s Scrotum, Mont., or some such and discover that suddenly they are a moderate or even somewhat progressive compared to their new neighbors?

They are building homes in areas of Southwest Riverside County that start in the high $400,000s. Jobs don't support them, but they are close to freeways. Someone once said they are communities of people who have never seen their house in the daytime on a weekday because of their 50+ mile commutes to LA, Orange and San Diego counties.

The freeways in SW Riverside County -- the 15 and the 91 -- suck. Despite the "improvements." My brother's family lived there (Corona). Their home sold (last I checked) for $1 million-plus. And they are nowhere near a beach. Closer to be-ready-to-evacuate-via-wildfire area. Though the northern view is quite nice when the smog is cleared. My SIL commutes A LOT to OC. But now it will be via Southwest. I don't begrudge them. My parents have a one-year-out plan, though talking with them tonight it might be sooner. My other brother there is looking a bit longer to salvage as much retirement as possible. It's a vastly different landscape from what we grew up in.
