I really did not like the Beard episode. Maybe it needs explained to me?

Was the woman in the red dress the devil? Why was the moon in so many shots? What was the significance of the gold key? Who is he getting redemption from? Why is he imagining things?

Odd, odd episode that didn't work for me, but I loved the Christmas episode. Like watching it will be a tradition in my home.

A metaphor for the Odyssey? He went out on a journey and kept losing his way home (dropping his key). He kept getting side tracked on his way to finding the woman he loved. Lost his crew. Lady in red was a Siren. Her boyfriend was a cyclops (or maybe one of the Scylla and Charybdis tandem). He goes to the alley aka Hades and has to fight his way out of hell. Then his key breaking was once again he thought he was home but needed to accomplish one last task.

I mean it’s that or some really obscure movie reference I missed which is possible.

He's reading a book in a lot of scenes ... chances are that one of the books was Odyssey.

The blue moon represents Man City.

It’s Man City’s song — you heard the fans singing it during the game. It symbolized how that loss followed Beard around and haunted him everywhere he went.

Also it symbolized how this was not a normal thing for him — it was a rare, crazy night. That was emphasized by Ted’s line at the end about how “every once in a blue moon” there’s a game so awful that you have to watch the film sped up while Yakety Sax is playing.

So here is the actual obscure reference the writers were making in the Beard Episode. It still sounds to me like it's a riff on the Odyssey, but the direct homage is to Scorsese

Complete random note — when the Greek chorus rolls up in the Limo, “Posse on Broadway” from Sir Mix-a-Lot is playing on the stereo system. Deep cut.

Beard after Dark > Christmas episode, IMO

The gratuitous sweetness of Christmas made me realize how important it is that the (not quite as) gratuitous sweetness of regular episodes be earned.

It left me feeling like all I had for dinner was Mike & Ike’s and whipped cream… a fun idea but bleh after a few minutes if that’s truly all you have.

Beard After Dark left me really thinking, especially about the character. Even if it was ultimately extraneous, it felt substantial.

It was a weird twist with the girlfriend, though, who we’ve been led to think is bad, bad news, but who comes out kinda-sorta ok at the end of this. We’ve seen that their relationship is insanely toxic, and we had maybe a whiff of that early in this episode, but their ending up together at the end seemed to drop that thread.
