I saw him at JazzFest years ago and was blown away. Pretty close to a perfect show.

I'm trying (unsuccessfully thus far) to talk my wife into going to see Modern English in March. They're playing 90 miles south of here one night, and 90 miles north of here the next. The only song of theirs I know is I Melt With You, but I just love love love that song. I would be happy to pay $25 for standing room only to hear that song.

I saw Chuck Mangione on Jan. 31, 1980, and the only song of his I knew was Feels So Good, so it wouldn't be my first time to see a one-hit wonder.

That would be an awesome recurring bit for a podcast: Concerts you’ve gone to where you only knew one or zero songs and the ensuing horror stories or revelations.

I’ve mentioned I had to cover a Lee Greenwood concert where he played God Bless the USA three times. Other times at festivals I’ve found some of my favorite artists after not knowing a single song.

I’ve heard Smashmouth concerts are shitshows because the whole crowd wants to hear All-Star and leave. (Cue Homer Simpson yelling “Get to the working overtime part!” at BTO.)

Don't confuse "the one track that you know" with "one-hit wonder."

Chuck Mangione had easily enough quality stuff to piece together a stellar concert ... his '70s catalog had some highlights and even wrote a score for a film (one of his best-kept secrets). He wrote the theme for the 1980 Winter Olympics - "Give It All You Got" - so that might have been another highlight for him to those who are familiar with only "Feels So Good."

Just purchased tickets for The Hold Steady's Weekender at the Electric Ballroom in Camden outside of London in March. LFG. Really want to go to the third show at MOTH Club but it already sold out before I could get to it. Dang. Hoping more tix become available. Can't wait to get back over to the UK for this.

Between that and the singer giving a Nazi salute and threatening to murder your family, Smashmouth shows could get a little out of hand.

Daughter and I got to the show, in the basement of a Madison, Wis., ranch house known as Kiki's House of Righteous Music. The place is a local legend. About 40 people were in attendance; everybody in the audience wore masks and brought their vaccination cards.

Here's one of the songs he played, based on the life of 1960s British record producer Joe Meek.

DMB in about 10 minutes. First show since all this started. Vaccines required.

We're planning to attend a Feb. 11 concert by the Denver-based band DeVotchKa. I like the Decemberists/Arcade Fire sound, so I think DeVotchKa will fill the bill. I hope the show includes costumes and masks for the audience, but we'll bring our own masks and vacc cards anyway.

It's funny. I'm not particularly paranoid about Covid -- I'm boosted and healthy, and if I do get it I'm likely looking at feeling like I have a cold for a few days. And I love live music. Having it go away during the pandemic has really sucked.

And yet... I'm really struggling to get excited about wading into a crowd of yahoos to see a show again. There are shows coming that would normally be really appealing. Joe Jackson is playing here in a few months. (Seen him three times. He's fantastic live. He's also a contrarian prick and may require you to prove you're Covid-positive before attending.) The Church is playing a small club. Should be a great show.

I also just got a spectacular remaster/reissue of The Church's "Starfish" on vinyl, and sitting in my den listening to that sounds more appealing right now than crowding into a club.

I suspect I'll get over it when there's a can't-miss show for me. But given that I've already passed on Elvis Costello and will likely do it for Joe Jackson, I'm not sure what can't-miss will be.

I did it for what was absolutely can't-miss for me a couple months back. Luckily, it was weeks before the Omicron variant was an issue on this side of the pond.

If it were an issue, I might think about it ... and, FWIW, I'm vaccinated and boosted. It was in an arena ... the mask came up for a fraction of a second to slip in a mint, other than that it stayed firmly over my mouth and nose.

I feel your pain, sir. But, these days, given too many deaths, too many people not giving a crap about masking or getting the vaccine - or two or three - I question going just about anywhere in public where I don't know who bothered with vaccinating and masking.
