I'm not sure anyone really believes they were actually going to hang Pence. I don't think Pence himself believes it. I still think the gallows were completely performative. Which is why all the Democratic handwringing over Mike Pence's safety strikes me as kind of stupid and ineffectual.

 

Kinzinger isn't running again.

 

If the insurrection inside the insurrection, the people who were organized with paramilitary ties and actual tactics, had gotten the hold of Pence or Pelosi or AOC, there would have been bloodshed. Possibly other Congress critters fall into that category. But there was actual planning, I will always believe that, and then you have to throw in the wildness of the mob mentality.

 

These are not just a bunch of decent people who wanted to be heard. They wanted to kill people. They wanted to overturn an election. They specifically said that.

 

Democrats have really gone too far to the left.

 

The gallows we see in the news photos was certainly more symbolic than practical - but it's impossible to predict mob violence once it starts.

And there were lots of average Americans in that crowd doing lots of real violence.

I'm sure no one in Charlottesville thought someone would drive into the crowd and kill Heather Heyer, either.

 

Nobody thinks they were going to hang him. But they hoped to overwhelm protective detail and beat him to death or maybe shoot him if any of them had gotten a gun in there.

 

He would have had to primary vs. a total buffoon in LaHood, whose entire campaign strategy was 'you all liked my dad when he was in office, so vote for me!'
LaHood is just starting to dip a toe into the batshit end of the pool, going against Kinzinger I imagine he would have dove in headfirst to the shallow end.

Illinois just redrew districts, if there is a stronger word than gerrymandered, this would be it. It combined Kinzinger's and LaHood's districts and would have forced a primary between the two in 2022.
