I've been thinking about this since the story broke yesterday, and I'm not proud of it, but "black or white?" was the first question that came to mind. I'm not proud of it but I think the fact of the matter is that narrative matters in public opinion. The fact that this driver was a black man with an extensive criminal record will allow Fox News et al to reinforce the "dangerous black criminals" narrative for as long as this story stays in the news cycle in much the same way that if the driver had been, say, a white supremacist, we would have spent an equal amount of time and energy fearing racist vigilantes.

The thing is that, outside of the people who are in Kenosha or know the victims, we as humans (especially now) lack the ability to see deeper than what the next cue to fear is. It's terrible, but I don't know how to break our culture out of that cycle.

I don't remember the Jewell story failing along specific left / right political lines at the time.

I think of it as an error on the part of the press for rushing ahead based on a partial profile ID provided by law enforcement.

Most media mistakes are pretty well described as just that, mistakes - especially early in the life of a story - but we've conditioned a couple generations of persecutionist nitwits to believe every journalism error is part of a "liberal" conspiracy.

Isn't transcribing without question whatever law enforcement tells us a deeply conservative act?

If I’m the police department, I’m praying that officer shooting at that vehicle did not cause him to speed up and become more reckless.

Of course you are, because you're a commie liberal who blames the police/Trump for everything and not the actual criminal. This is a lunatic who deserves the death penalty.

Communists are smart enough to not fire a weapon at a moving vehicle in the middle of a parade.

    He deserves life in prison.

Doesn’t mean the police officer didn’t fuck up, too.
