In which state did the strongest U.S. earthquake strike?
While we're at it, in which state did the second-strongest U.S. earthquake strike?

I was going to guess Missouri.

I think the strongest was supposed to be the New Madrid Mo. quake. I always wondered how that was evaluated, since it occurred in 1811 or 1812 in a frontier area.

I think the 1964 quake in Alaska was over 9 and it might be the only recorded 9 in the US. And Alaska has had several other mid to high 8s as well which is my guess is Alaska.

You sure? Isn’t the Rat Island quake in 65 bigger?

    Fail. Fail.
Alaska is the site of the first several items on the list. My apologies.
Missouri’s distinction is that it’s the site of the strongest quake in the lower 48. Poorly phrased question on my part.

The one in Charleston, S.C., in 1886 might be the one most widely felt by the U.S. population at the time, considering the percentage of residents living east of the Mississippi. That shook the ground from Boston to Cuba, and as far west as Milwaukee and New Orleans.

EDIT: Fail on my part. I misread the natural causes part. Thought you meant the wife died of natural causes.
