    Serious question. ... when was the last time the Atlanta Fed came within 7 zip codes of what actually happens with those forecasts? You may as well be giving a weather report for a random day next March.

    The fact is, economic output contracted dramatically in 2020 and the expected bounces throughout this year have kept missing. At some point, enough businesses are going to be operating close enough to capacity that we are likely going to get a huge bounce off of the depressed numbers. Whenever that happens, this quarter, sometime next year, or otherwise, it may or may not be perceived as good news for Joe Biden. But it really has nothing to do with him.

    The contradiction between economic data (much if not all positive) and public's opinion of the economy (quite negative) says to me that the public's opinion has little to do with the economy per se. It's a stand-in for the continued disruption of everyday life caused by the pandemic. More than that, they're tired of hearing about the pandemic. It's a big Something's Wrong and that tends to bleed into seeing something wrong with everything.
