New York Times Tops 10 Million Subscriptions as Profit Soars

    Probably because you virtually cannot read the NYT online without a subscription. It is literally forcing people to subscribe, if they want to read anything.

    one workaround for that was to engage ctrl-A very quickly upon opening the page, and then pasting the contents into any simple text document to read.

    If you use an iPhone/iPad or the Safari browser, almost every story is accessible in Reader mode.

    Control-A, Control-C, paste into Word before the pay hammer drops is my dear old friend. Still works.

    You also could just look at the source code.

    Good for them for charging. Everyone should've done it a long time ago.

    Kind of like instructing a sibling to go stand in a corner of the room with a literal aluminum foil hat on so the Playboy Channel will magically unscramble itself.

    Your local library may provide free online access. Mine gives a three-day pass for free.

    or just do that but install Instapaper on your Chrome browser and hit the button very quickly

    Obviously biased, but there are still a few steps between registration -- which is free -- and being encouraged to climb the pay wall.
