Mom was a North Dakota farm girl when her stepdad lost their place to creditors in the late 1920s. When she turned 16 she left home and its many mouths to feed and headed to Chicago to work as a nanny. One of her employers was a gangster named Frank "Skippy" Cerone.

One day Cerone introduced her to a guest. "You just shook hands with Benny Goodman," she was told.

"Who's he?" she responded. Mom loved to tell that story.

Goodman employed another Stutsman County, ND, girl himself at one point.

I saw the Miller band and a band of Dorsey brother vets several years ago. Great stuff.

I have seen hundreds of rock shows, most of the biggest bands in the world, but there are few things that can match a big band at full blast.

The Tommy Dorsey Band was playing at the Clear Lake Ballroom when I went there in 1988 or so.

I heard this three times today. Talk about a durable one-hit wonder

This is a Playing for Change video. All these musicians recorded their parts remotely and then they were mixed down. JP Jones, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and many others.

Excellent. Also enjoy “Breaking Us In Two” and I heard a better live version of “Steppin’ Out.” Slowed it down … made it more soulful and reflective. Typical Joe Jackson. Loathes being put in a box, so he comes with varieties of his own track. Grossly underrated, IMO.

Nice track.I've always considered the LZ arrangement the heaviest the thing the band ever recorded. The sheer volume of this version makes its impact ever greater.

Here's a remake of another heavy classic.

You pretty much described the 1968 Beatles.

He has a live album that has "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" on it three times -- in totally different arrangements. And they're great.
