There was a night crew here, back when you know newspapers had folks on the desk who worked late into the night with normal deadlines and were wired for a few hours after.

As others have said, the banter made it. Newsrooms are filled with some damn sharp people. And weird people. And many of us are anti-social. As one former boss said, if we were the social ones we'd be cold-calling businesses and trying to sell. This provided the perfect outlet.

(The folks here who left journalism all seem happier, for what it's worth. The chance to grouse about work without overwhelming your friends/significant other/siblings/parents also was a key part of what was here.)

A place for smart people to eat beer nuts and bullshit about stuff. I never understood the need to make this place more than it ever needed to be.

Sure some of the posters passed on to the llama farm in the Great Beyond, while others left ... lol left, yeah right ... or started SJ 2.0 and SJ 3.0 but always maintained dual or even tri-citizenship here. It is what it is, and It is a beautiful thing. We're all hot and bothered and drippin' from our tongues.

Saw this cutie while driving on Venice Boulevard an hour ago. It's 85 degrees in February.

A scrub is a lab that can't get no love from me.

Long-Faded Turf is going to be the name of my pickle ball team when I move to The Villages.

You know what? 2.0, 3.0, the future 4.0, etc., (will) serve their purposes well. Some people had legit reasons to switch allegiances or hold dual citizenship. Some of the people who caused one falling out had their own falling out much later. Almost every online community I’ve been part of has fractured at some point.

I used to post frequently at one of them and never felt particularly welcome, so I stopped — not angry about it, just would prefer to be somewhere where folks engage with me even when I’m a complete dumbass (every day). And there are enough idiots here who indulge me.

Good point. It's not always clear to me there is much "joy" among younger writers, though, to be fair, I follow mostly national ones and Twitter does not help. Twitter serves as the place where you say all the things you think so it doesn't get channeled into your work. Better to save it for the work - in the reporting the stories you think need to be told.
