I agree. Plus, how much of an issue can you have with someone’s “writing” these days. Do you see some of these beat writers out there? It’s not about “the writing” anymore.

I think the really interesting thing here might be Geoff Baker. Very telling he didn't sign the petition and he's been there forever. Maybe she annoyed him and he has the sway to say it's her or me and ensure it's her? Also very interesting he hasn't Tweeted anything other than links since Feb. 2, even though the Kraken was home last night. He didn't cover the game.

I agree. I have no idea what happened, but the idea that the paper would bring her in from across the country, say not one word to her about any performance issues, then fire her mid-season without any explanation strains credibility.

But in this business, I guess anything is possible.

Have you seen how people have been treated for the last decade in particular? There's a reason the vast majority of this board is full of FORMER journalists. People were laid off without warning or quit because of how they were treated.

So I think it's absolutely possible that a newspaper hired someone to move across the country and then let her go six months later because they changed their mind or something.

And getting rid of the ONLY female beat writer on the staff (I think there's a female editor) ... surprised the AWSM hasn't said anything about this yet ...

Lots of speculation here. Most of it off base.
The top two editors at The Seattle Times are women. Two others are women of color.

I still don't see what the upside is for the paper. They aren't saving a position, just replacing one.

She was let go in the probationary period -- if they don't like you, they don't have to keep you. Could be as simple as a "chemistry" issue in the newsroom - it's management's yin to the union's "performance review" yang.

Can we at least all agree that she wasn’t fired for being a woman?

The Times conducted a national search. It isn't out of the ordinary to expect the person they hired to move to Seattle to cover the first-year expansion team. In this case it went the way of Urban Meyer with the Jaguars.

Portnoy’s flying monkeys are all over this.

I’m pretty sure this never happened.

They fired her for no reason?
