Pearlman on sportsjournalist.com: "long-faded turf"

I would say this place is, and always has been, not as much social media as, rather, a media social.

That is, there is, and has always been, a traditional media bent to this place that impacts people's perspectives, tones, principles and outlooks toward others, and issues. That same bent has, in my opinion, usually helped to keep things honest and aboveboard, for lack of a better way to describe it. Whether we agree or disagree on particular things, the people here are, generally speaking, smart, interested, passionate and caring, and principled. Like most good journalists are.

So, the "media" influence, even now, with all of us who have left the business, is still kind of front-and-center, at least in that influential way. And the fact that we can, and do, discuss, well, anything and everything, is what makes it a social, and something of a social stop for all of us who have made it a habit to check in regularly, even if only to see what's going on here.

We can't help it. In a good way.:)

If there is anyone who knows what it is like to be long-faded turf, it is Jeff Pearlman.
Everything has heydays and then declines. And that's fine.

One of the sites is almost all politics and/or focus on one writer. Just not diverse enough in that way.

I think the first time I started frequenting this site was sometime in 2003. Mostly lurking. I guess still lurking with less that 6,000 posts in nearly 20 years.

The big arguments were fun to follow. Especially never knowing who might be a “big name” weighing in.

It’s still a daily habit for sure. Somehow I’m still in the biz, though I won’t be sad to leave if I can get a good gig.

The average forum lasts a few months. Many don't make it a year. I think I read the average 'podcast' is six 'episodes'.

This forum is nearly old enough to drink, under various banners and styles of ownership. The turnover is in step with any other vicissitude in life.

I'm a little proud of at least one thing that has been consistent for the life of this site.

I have a couple of sections of the old Veterans Stadium field. I'm going to sell them as LFTs.

Times have changed so much, and the industry has undergone multiple seismic shifts in the nearly 15 years (shit, has it been that long?) since I began posting here.

I remember the first time I heard of Twitter was on this board, and it was on a thread that was ripping a young female journalist from a paper in Florida who had tweeted out that she was glad that changes were being made at her paper that was resulting in layoffs of older coworkers because it meant that her paper was modernizing. Everyone was ripping on her because she wasn't being sympathetic enough to those who were losing their jobs. For some reason, I remember she called herself "lovely and talented" on her Twitter profile, so maybe that had something to do with it as well.

Now, we're all locked in on Twitter.

When I got an SJ account, I think I was about to enter my junior year of college and really wanted to just learn more about the business. And as I'm still in the business 11 years later, I can't quit this place.

However, the board has the potential to be a good resource for those in the business and those foolishly looking to become a sports writer (please, don't do it).

I wonder if she's still in the biz.
