The turf at the Vet wasn't faded, but the stories from players about being a horror show is accurate. Marched on that one game Sunday (was in College Park for a road game against Maryland the previous evening). The seams and such all over that field were a horror show.

Not sure Jim McMahon, who was on the field while we were rehearsing that Sunday morning, would have disagreed.

Back on topic ... not sure what we know. Obviously, a lot we don't know, though Geoff Baker's side of the issue shed a lot of light and that we really don't know anything. As journalists, though, that doesn't mean the questions will simply disappear.

I’ve met Marisa a few times. I don’t know her well but know people who do.

She struck me as someone who was passionate about the job and what she covered and a hard worker.

She didn’t seem like a know-it-all. She seemed like the kind of person who was willing to listen and learn and if her boss told her she needed to improve something, she would have done her damnedest to do it.

Here is a theory from a guy who generally covers Canadian sports media, but lives in Seattle and has a decent track record of string sources to speak to him off the record. You will need to read the thread:

I'll stick with my hunch that Portnoy Thiel'd her behind the scenes.

If the Seattle Times got spooked by Barstool bros, that's bullshit.

I'm assuming the question came up in the job interview. I assume she answered it to their satisfaction. If they didn't ask her about it, that's some bad management. Google is your friend.

Also "sandpaper-like persona"... but she's nice? What does that even mean? She came from Boston and has an accent? I really don't know. (I'm legitimately asking this: Would we be saying a guy had a "sandpaper-like persona"? Perhaps we'd just say he's aggressive.)

I suppose I could see how someone would see her persona as sandpaper-like. She's on Twitter a lot, not shy about her beliefs and has little filter. But, again, if that's a surprise to you as the employer, you did a horseshit job of vetting her. The Twitter account is right there.

Looks like Katherine Fominykh didn't agree with him.

If Geoff doesn't know why she was fired, I doubt anyone outside of those who did the actual firing do.

    That we all agree on.

Has a job posting thread about a non-JRC paper ever got to nine pages so quickly?

I’ve seen some of you attribute her Boston Herald firing to being a casualty of the pandemic. While lots of people were let go during the pandemic, she was on the Bruins beat for the second-biggest paper in town. Pandemic or no pandemic, if management felt she was that talented, I’m sure they would’ve done what they needed to to keep her around. Anybody with connections at the Herald, though, knows there was more to her departure than simply being a pandemic casualty.

Now that she’s out of the Times, at some point you would think people might wonder, “this woman has been fired from her last two full-time gigs, maybe she’s actually doing something wrong?” It speaks volumes, to me anyways, that her loudest supporters seem to be the national media types and not much from the Boston area. I guess it makes sense given what some Herald folks say about her time there.

I don’t know, does anybody really believe the Times management didn’t tell her why she got fired? I don’t buy that. I also think it’s silly that she said “I got fired with no warning!” … it screams entitlement and an overall lack of understanding

I think it's rich for someone to be retweeting and promoting all the nice things people (who likely have no clue what happened) are saying to her in defense, when she's staying silent.

"On Jan. 28, I was fired by The Seattle Times without warning. I’m shocked and disappointed and wish I had more answers. I have much more to say and hopefully will be back writing soon."
