And in this instance, Times management doesn't have to.

The Herald layoffs were based on seniority. Do people not understand this?

I am sure that this gentleman knows some people and this theory could be true. However, I would be cautious with trusting a journalist who, when pressed on if he actually contacted Marissa for this report, said he reached out to the Seattle Times e-mail that she clearly no longer has access to.

I saw that follow up, I don’t think it was there when I linked. And he’s an in-house lawyer for a company in Seattle. Like he doesn’t know that email is zapped right away.

Big picture, I suspect the writer has some inclination why she was fired, but the Times has no obligation to get into it with her. Telling people why they are being fired, when it’s for not meeting the standard, is a miserable no win proposition.

Some people apparently don't understand how the pandemic worked, either.

Has AWSM said anything about this?

Not the direct point, but what's with this "fired without warning" shit?

How many of us don't get fired without warning? My "fired" consisted of the publisher stopping in the newsroom for 75 seconds to tell us that the newspaper's production was being outsourced to a neighboring state.

"Yes, Marissa, we'll be letting you go in seven weeks. But you keep pumping out those articles and try to work on that resume in the meantime."

Since I don't Twitter, can somebody quickly explain what happened with Barstool? Something about raising money for a paralyzed female hockey player. I couldn't quite figure it out. Did she take credit for something the Barstool dude did? Thanks in advance.

I think perhaps you can read between the lines here. If she was fired with no warning as she has said, perhaps that is shorthand for her earlier reviews being fine. Seems to me that if, at any time during her probationary, her employer had told her there were some things she needed to work on, she would then suspect that she could get fired. But like everyone else, I'm just speculating.

That’s the way I took it. By “warning “ that her supervisor gave some indication that she wasn’t doing what they expected of her.

One thing I wonder, if someone is fired under these circumstances, can they collect unemployment? It may vary from state to state but as I understand it, if she wasn’t performing up to their stands, she did the best she could and it just didn’t work out, she could, but if it’s some sort of misconduct, she can’t.
