I'm firmly in the personal risk assessment camp at this point. I do believe that masks on planes and public transport should remain, and I certainly plan on wearing mine on the tube and buses in London. That's just common sense in avoiding any respiratory virus--colds, flus, covid, etc.

Immunocompromised folks already had to make risk assessments when they went out, even when it was "just the flu" circulating around.

If you want to wear a mask in the grocery store or any other public place, please do. That's your choice. It's affecting no one but yourself. It's been proven that one-way masking is indeed effective in protection, perhaps not at the level as two-way, but the protection is there.

If you don't want to go to bars and restaurants or mix it up shoulder to shoulder with people at a concert, don't. But don't begrudge those of us who want to.

If you have vulnerable people in your life, you need to think hard about what level of risk you're willing to take.

If you feel like shit, take a test, and if positive, isolate.

But the idea that governments need to be mandating mask wearing at this point is antiquated. We have a toolkit to fight the disease, one we didn't have even a year ago. The HUGE caveat of course being the littles not yet being able to be vaccinated. I do feel for parents of children 5-under, because they're in a tough spot. But even for the 6-18 crowd, I hear a lot of parents who are vaccinated but aren't willing to vaccinate their children. I have a coworker in that camp. That's a problem.

Get the vax. Get the boost. Live your life. The amount of willing unvaccinated out there makes the spread nearly impossible to stop. You can only do what you can do to protect yourself.

Interesting thread here compares Omicron Florida to Omicron California.

    the most relevant graph:

33% higher deaths per capita in Florida.

Why? Probably the lower booster rate.

    Sad DeSantis trombone.

So we're talking about old people in Florida who got shot No. 1, got shot No. 2 . . . but for some reason did not get shot No. 3.

I'm pretty sure Ron DeSantis had little to do with them eschewing the booster.
