Phil trying to leverage the PGA Tour by playing footsie with the Saudis is like a teenager in the late 1960s threatening to join the Manson family if she doesn't get a later curfew. And for a guy who thinks he's smart, he has no idea how much the network TV rights fees would drop if the Tour allowed players full access to their media images. NO pro sports league allows its athletes the rights to their images. But he wants to go even further. He said earlier this year that he wants to have a small camera on his hat, his caddie's hat, on the bag, and stream video of his rounds.

NBC and CBS will get a big kick out of that.

For all the goodwill Phil did with the Tour and all of his fans over the past 30 years, all it took was the stroke of a check to piss all of that away.

The reason why he's a multi-multi-millionaire to begin with is network TV rights fees. Any sports fan with an iota of business sense would have stopped listening to Phil when he went on that media rights tangent.

OK, Phil, put that camera on your bag and offer the raw stream for $5 per round. You won't make enough money to cover a week at Five Guys.

Call him all those things. Because he is all those things.

He wasn't wrong about the Nike equipment, which sucks in general, but particularly in comparison to Callaway. And I think his comment about flying it by Tiger off the tee was tongue-in-cheek. He always could, and always will be able to hit the ball farther than Tiger. But that's about it. And he knew/knows that.

Always enjoyed watching Phil play because what other player in history could stand over the ball and simultaneously have a chance to hit the best and worst shot you have ever seen? Watching Tiger is watching greatness. Well, was. Watching Phil is fascination with the abomination. And sometimes the blowups are more entertaining than the shots from the pine straw.

All that said, who is managing Phil right now, other than Phil? Because, holy shit. I know a lot of people already didn't like the guy, but I'm guessing right about now almost everybody doesn't like the guy. He's gone full-Kuchar.

If you want someone to be the face of a new tour, you would want Phil above anyone else, given how personable he is. Add that to his greed/lack of caring about ethical concerns/potential cash flow issues and it’s a marriage made in heaven.

No, I’d want someone half of Phil’s age like Ricky Fowler.

If you want to get casual golf fans excited, the list starts with Tiger and Phil. Brooks, Jordan and Bryson are all obviously better now and have brighter futures (along with many others), but they don’t have the personality or name recognition of Phil.

I’m not recruiting anyone in their 50s to “excite” anyone. And if I no choice because I have a gun to my head (which isn’t out of the realm with Saudis involved) I’m picking John Daly, who would at least have the decency to play drunk and without a shirt.

Is it just me or have the weekly very low scores made the start of the season a pretty boring affair?
Course after course are just rolling over for the tour so far.
