    Now it’s getting real.

I've seen a bunch of those photos with him in fatigues, with the meme that he has picked up a rifle to defend the country. But those photos are old, from months ago. In general, people need to be careful about what is true and what is BS, with the stories coming out of there.

That said, Zelensky has really inspired me. And I am the most cynical person alive. Supposedly the U.S. or France offered to get him out of the country and he told them he isn't going anywhere. One report, although I have no idea if it is true, said that he told them he needs ammunition, not a ride.

Even cutting through whatever likely apocryphal stories we're getting, there is no doubt that he has balls the size of watermelons. Would anyone blame him if he had gotten the hell out of there? What he appears to be doing is pure Churchill / courage / leadership right now. I find it inspirational.

The Ghost of Kyiv thing turned out to be from a flight simulator, so who knows what’s real at this point?

I agree that Zelensky has shown real courage in all this. Not just him, but Vitali Klitschko is now the mayor of Kyiv and he and his brother have stayed to fight. They could retire anywhere, donate money and give speeches without getting into harms way.

Ukraine elects a former comedian and gets a leader, while we elect a former reality show host and get TFG. I hate this timeline.

My son is 12. I’m glad you think forced conscription is OK for him in six years. Where did you both serve?

The appeal to the Russian people Zelensky made before the attack was magnificent.

Full transcript of Zelenskyy's emotional appeal to Russians

"If they try to take our country away from us, our freedom, our lives, the lives of our children, we will defend ourselves. Not attack, but defend ourselves. And when you will be attacking us, you will see our faces, not our backs, but our faces."

There is an odd symmetry in a comedian who shows he's a leader, when nearly every other would-be leader shows themselves to be a joke.

I'm absolutely in favor of requiring service for young people.

And before you ask, United States Navy.

Cool. You want your kids to serve, go for it. You don’t get to make that decision for my son.

I think 2 years of mandatory national service is a good idea. Doesn't have to be military service. Can be Civilian Conservation Corps kind of stuff. Medical. Construction. Ag. Education. Outreach.

In exchange, all-you-can-eat free college, including medical or law school. Or interest-free small business loans. A bigger, better GI Bill.

Might help restore a sense of community, a sense of acting on behalf of the national / common good.
