This makes a difference in the outcome. Add that Putin had just risen to his first Premiereship in 1999, followed by his having Moscow apartment buildings bombed to provide a pretense to kick off the war. Totally crushing the Chechens gave him additional Strong Man cred that fueled his further rise to power.

R 135 is the Recon version of the Boeing KC-135, but there are many variants, so it depends which one it was. E6 is an airborne command and control plane. B742 is a 747 variant, military. The Dc-10 is, well, a DC-10.
