Chuck Todd is a casualty of usage rate. Great in the Kornacki role, a complete disaster as a host.

I'm starting to see stories from actual news sources (no social media) that say Russian troops are surrendering in what are essentially mutinies because 1. they are refusing to target civilians and 2. they haven't been fed in days.

Sadly, going scorched earth on their own country and being perfectly willing to have many Russians die for their country have been two core principles of Russian military doctrine for centuries.

The more I think about the moment, I am thinking we may potentially be at a more dangerous time than many people are appreciating.

Let's assume that Putin thought he could get away with the invasion without the kinds of resistance and consequences it has brought. That leaves us now in a place where none of us know if he might double-down b/c he can't admit defeat. Taking an off ramp if it is offered would not be in character for him, so you have to wonder if this is inevitably going to escalate now.

If it escalates, it is going to galvanize Western Europe, the U.S., Canada and the other democracies around the world more than they already are. Which is exactly what Russia is afraid of (but is creating a self fulfilling prophecy). The unified response, especially if other countries feel obligated to enter the fight, will spook Russia even more, and it will definitely spook China too, which deals in repression, as well. I mean, right now they are watching this with Taiwan on their mind. If they end up feeling like their backs are against the wall against a more galvanized west, should we be worried that it can lead to a world war with say Russia, China and Iran as the axis of evil?

I can't believe I am saying this, but that doesn't feel like much of a stretch to me now. And if it gets anywhere near there, I can't imagine what the death toll of that war would end up looking like.

    1. Putin desperation is for sure something to be concerned about.

    2. China is not on the verge of an invasion of Taiwan. There's simply no way for China to launch a "surprise" attack on Taiwan. It would take an enormous logistical train and a significant amount of time to assemble all the components necessary. We would see it coming ... by a lot.

What's more: I'm not even sure China believes they have the blue water navy necessary to invade Taiwan.

The death toll of that war = current human population. Which is why it won't happen. And why there will be no nukes used. As always, be afraid of the guy with one nuke, not the one with many. They know they can't use them so they won't. Using them is suicide. And in order to commit such suicide will take two keys, each manned by an individual who won't be willing to turn them. Not for this.

Far to often when I have assumed people would have too much sense to do something those very people show me that my assumption was incorrect.

Except Putin doesn’t care. Then it’s going to be up to the inner circle to decide if they want to be associated with the madman.

I take what you say seriously, my hope is that China is more interested in economic domination of the world than military domination/war and will reach an economic solution.

True, but we're not exactly talking about spreading hot pink mulch in the garden or putting pineapples on pizza here.
