My issue is everybody suddenly inviting themselves over to my house. My childhood neighbor put in a fantastic inground. He told us it was the worst decision he ever made. He had to subsequently build a poolhouse that cost another $15k with a bathroom to keep all his family members and neighborhood kid from tracking through his living space every weekend.

Again, I want to be the relative or neighbor taking advantage of that poor man, not that poor sap.

Figured I'd merge my baseball fandom and lingering COVID concerns and continue to mask up in public settings until Opening Day.

Wow, I had no idea, in what area do they have to drain and fill pools every year?
I was a little surprised to see that in the Myrtle Beach are, they don't even cover them up for the winter.

I worked in the yard for the first time this year, yesterday, and it occurred to me that I should have a baseball game in my ear and not a podcast.

Yeah. North thing. We have a cabana bath, with a door right to the pool. Most houses with pools down here are like that. And our floors are tile. Also the norm.

Anywhere the water turns to ice, I believe.

Most just cover their pools in winter. Have a few friends with them (Hi, Hermes!) and visit them all. Inground, above-ground .... nobody's is freezing much below the surface, and all have heaters to keep the temp above 40*.

That’s not even getting into the increased energy costs.

My sister-in-law just bought a house with a pool — it’s a beautiful setup. But their utility bills triple or quadruple in the summer, and that’s with them a solar cover to keep the water warm. Their bills would be even higher with a heater or a hot tub.

There is a house on the next block that has an inground pool. We looked at it 30 years ago when we were house hunting in this neighborhood. No effin' way. In Massachusetts? An expensive, time-consuming thing that one uses all of two months a year? Neighborhood had a pool club where you could join for then (this is mid-90s) for $500 a year. Much better deal.

The former owners of this house had an inflatable hot tub. I didn’t know there were such things. We thought about keeping it for like four seconds, until their Realtor — they’d stayed south during COVID (on topic!), and he was a friend of the family handling the logistics — told us that there were “a lot of fun” gatherings involving the hot tub.

My girlfriend’s lifelong best friend and her husband do well for themselves… they have a lake house in Maine and a boat up there. I love boats but I’d never buy one unless I had serious fuck-you money. I’ll just ride theirs.

Exactly how much chlamydia was in that water?
