Right. I understand your point. Valid point. So what is the answer? Let Ukraine take money, toys, tactics and intelligence and lots of attaboys?

    That's not sarcasm.

There have been wars going around the world for decades. When the US gets involved, a lot of times we trick over our own dick.

Weird how this war is in a 'civilized' country and so many here can't wait (for other americans) to start fighting.

    This is an interesting read.

I'm no expert but I have never seen sanctions on a country like what's going on with Russia. I am super interested to see how this plays out.

There are other weapons besides guns and missiles.

NATO was founded in 1949 to defend Western Europe from Soviet expansion.

Across those 73 years, we've poured trillions of dollars into it - and into our own military - based on the promise of a mutual defense against militarism in Europe.

This would seem a moment to act on that promise.

    Edited, to correct, as below.

    Agreed.

But the truth is those economic sanctions, no matter how powerful, won't act fast enough to prevent a lot of deaths.

By all means, we need to cut Russia off from its money and the rest of the world.

But that alone likely won't be enough to deter Putin.

NATO wasn't founded on a promise of mutual defense of Eastern Europe. It was founded on a a mutual defense against Eastern Europe. Post Cold War NATO's purpose has never been clear.

No. This is historically inaccurate. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization didn't even HAVE Eastern European members until the fall of the Soviet Union. It was exclusively a Western European organization founded, as one anonymous diplomat said at the time to "keep the Germans down, the Russians out, and the Americans in." It's a mutual defense treaty between the sovereign states which are its members. Ukraine is not a member. When the Soviets sent troops into Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968, NATO did nothing, because they weren't members at the time.

How many deaths will be prevented by nuclear exchange?

Why assume the only two settings here are 'capitulation' or 'nuclear war'?
