Netflix: Greed is Good

I wonder about Netflix's long term survival. It has to produce most of its content as the media companies all started their own streaming services. They have a ton of debt. I don't think making cheesy rom-coms and teen. Movies will work over the long term.

You and Justgladtobehere are making Netflix’s case for trying this.

No idea. I am curious, though. I suspect you have a point to make.

I'll get it. Or someone else will. Give me time.

Actually, I'm posting the quiet part out loud. They are lying and saying it is about generating exciting new content. Really, it's about expanding their own bottom line. That's fine. That's what companies do. The lie was just annoying.

But is it about expanding their bottom line? Or is it acknowledging the reality of what Justgladtobehere posted? They’ve lost a ton of content, they aren’t growing their subscriber base at rate that will sustain the business and “cheesy rom coms” aren’t going to expand that base.

In the face of those challenges, intentionally allowing people to share passwords would be stupid, not greedy.

HBOMax is the Cadillac of streaming services.

    Netflix is a Chevy.

    But I don’t blame Netflix.

What is the next step? Another rate hike? That’s fine. I don’t see why Netflix wouldn’t try to find the maximum subscription rate they can get people to pay for their service.

I think we pay $20/month right now. That’s probably the top of what I’m willing to pay. If they go higher, I’ll cancel and hope they either lower rates in the future or maybe I get a promo rate somewhere down the line.

But if enough people are willing to pay more for it, I won’t begrudge Netflix for charging whatever they can.

I explained the next step, which will be raising the price for use of the site outside of the primary location. The example I gave students away for college.
