Define “let your guard down.” Wearing masks everywhere? Social distancing?

There seems to be a rough compromise in my town. In restaurants, nobody comes in wearing a mask. In large stores like the supermarket, it's a little more than 50 percent. In small crowded stores like the local packy (liquor store in Masshole), it's damn near universal. Should be noted this town has a real old population, median age over 60.

How about vaccinations and boosters from the refuseniks?

I think it could be argued that those folks never had their guards up.

Have you been to the South Coast? Good luck finding anyone with a mask, anywhere, anytime.

This is the Outer Cape, where the olds go.

It's not the Outer Cape. It's off the Cape and it is a mix of working class people and people who summer there.

rather surprised by the number of masks I have seen in Florida. Granted I am not in Leesburg or DeFuniak Springs.

If I have to get another shot, I’ll get it. If the data points to masks being needed again, I’ll put them back on.

In the meantime, what am I profiting by living in existential dread during this lull, even if it only turns out to be a few weeks?

My Florida has about 1% of the people wearing masks. But my county has not had any hospitalizations for covid in about 2 weeks

Yes. To all the above. OK, if you know they've vaxxed and boosted, you might be more willing to relax. But ... do we know that people have made any more emphasis on getting vaccinated?

I just got back from eating with family elsewhere in the neighborhood. My mother's husband was at an auction in a rural area. Someone merely whispered the possibility that someone might have had the virus. The man got on the PA and made clear that if anyone thinks they have it - or has recently been someone around who has it - to leave. Kinda surprised me because, in some pockets of the country, those are the sort of folks you're not certain if they really think of the pandemic, infecting one another or any of the other issues. Then, as the story goes, the guy on the PA said it that he's had it twice and that it wasn't fun. So, if nothing else, because he has undergone it himself, he's enforcing it. Good for him ... and everyone around that auction. Good to know that not all red areas are putting the political statement first.

As I was writing this post, a local ad recommending that people get vaccinated against COVID-19 came on. Good.

For the millionth time, this is NOT about politics. It's about science, our health and our survival. At some point, it's likely to become "merely endemic." But we're not there yet, and letting our guard down has not helped us get over the outbreaks and rough spots.

Between this concern and the fact that my school has actually sold out its arena in advance multiple times this season, I didn't go see my alma mater today ... and I wanted to. They have had home NCAA tournament games for years. It's not because I don't still really enjoy the experience.
