You’re forgetting Carole King’s songwriting career. She belongs in the hall without “Tapestry.”

She wrote “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” when she was 18. The Beatles and Aretha Franklin recorded her songs.

I have nothing against Carly Simon — she’s solidly in the Hall of Stuff My Mom Listened To When I Was A Kid — but she’s not in Carole King’s league.

Fully agree. King did stuff for James Taylor in addition to the Beatles and Aretha. No question of her credibility on that front.

Now ... is Jann Wenner more about songwriting - i.e., about your own work an well as your written work performed by others - or about your discography?

Not an attack on you, PCLL. Legitimate question.

In this case I think she's solidly in for both, and songwriting probably more than her discography, even though "Tapestry" was a monster.

Side note, and I've said this before: I think people complain about the hall much more than it deserves (and I have no idea just how much control Jann Wenner really has in that regard). There are people who aren't in who I think belong there and there are people who are in that I think really didn't deserve it.... but really, those are mostly semi-borderline cases. They have blind spots -- there are some 80s British bands that should be in, and metal seems really underrepresented -- but overall it's really hard to argue with the selections.

(That said, I think this year's nominees show that they're kind of running out of great options.)

Freddy Cannon had a real over-the-top vocal style. Not that the Raiders were shrinking violets.

Yep, I think The Shondells are worthy of consideration. I always liked Burton Cummings, but ...

I saw Loverboy play after a Tampa Bay Devil Rays game in the late '00s, and they went at it like the stadium was a) full and b) there specifically to see them. They were way better than I expected.

Had no idea…mirage is a brilliant little song…and now I can’t hear it as a backwards “alone now.”

Worth noting… a lot of 1980s artists scored major hits with covers of Tommy James hits…

also worth noting, the Tiffany version of “alone now” has a new following in the 30 and under set because of its use in The Umbrella Academy.

Yes, Joan Jett is in the hall for covering Tommy's "Crimson and Clover."

They're actually a talented bunch. Just didn't write the deepest songs. But it was fun shit, and when you were a 15-year-old boy in the 80s, and you went to see them play in front of 18,000 people, 75 percent of whom were female, well, do the math ...

    This one's a pretty solid '80s rocker ...
