Streelman flew the 13th green AND the hospitality suites, landing next to the grandstand surrounding the nearby 14th hole, more specifically the spot under the stairs between two suites. He called over an official and got a drop to where he could take a full swing. So he's on hardpan with about a six-foot window of space between the suite and the TV tower on 13. To make matters more exciting, he's short-sided a narrow, steeply-sloped green with a bunker in front and water behind if he lands it anywhere on the putting surface.

Instead of the hero shot, he opted to knock it into the bunker, then made a nice up-and-down from there for a bogey 4, keeping a big number off the card. Real fun to see a pro calculate his options in real time. I need to learn from that.

Kevin Yu wasn't so fortunate on No. 10 while we were watching the afternoon group. First hole of his round, he yanks one way left into the live oaks, then can't get out of jail with his second and third shots as he keeps hitting branches. His fourth landed in the right-side bunker. He chipped out and two-putted for a triple-bogey 7, but played well after that.

Mickelson not playing Augusta. I’d love to know how that decision came about.

That's pretty heavy, a three-time past champion. He really can't face the music, can he? Just show up, admit you fucked up, and it's a one-day story.

Mickelson on secret suspension like Dustin Johnson?

Also, Tiger not yet on the list of past champions not playing. Might just be waiting as long as he can to see if he can go, which is probably a long shot.

Guessing this was a green jackets decision. Phil can serve his penance at Southern Hills if he decides to defend the PGA in May.

PGA Tour suspension wouldn’t apply at ANGC.

With the way they control the spectators and the story, Augusta would be by far the most friendly place to come back. I suspect he wasn’t invited, or the Tour told him his future would be a lot easier if he sits this one out.

Tiger famously waits until the last minute, and it’s not like he’s taking up a spot in the field like a normal event. If I had to bet I would think he’s not healthy enough to walk the course.

Tiger playing would be a bigger upset in Phil not playing. Not happening. He's not going to Willie Mays it out there.

    More interesting subplot.

Does Phil show up at the Champions Dinner?

Not a chance. In for a penny, in for a pound.

I agree, but it's Phil. Show up for the meal, don't have to face the big, bad media.
